Brunsbüttel coal-fired plant

Repower is involved in a SüdWestStrom project to build and operate a modern, highly-efficient hard coal-fired plant in Brunsbüttel (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany). The plan is to build two 900 MW power blocks at an outstanding location on the River Elbe. Repower will hold a share of between 200 to 400 MW.

Repower and SüdWestStrom, a company operated by around 100 municipal utilities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, have had close business relations for a number of years.

At the beginning of 2011, the Schleswig-Holstein authorities have given initial restricted planning permission for the project. The new plant could be commissioned by 2017.

The Brunsbüttel plant accords with Repower’s strategy of stepping up its own generation to underpin trading and sales activities in Germany. Another pillar of Repower’s strategy is the technological diversification of its generation portfolio, which already comprises hydroelectric, thermal and wind power as well as interests in nuclear assets.
